How to migrate correctly to ShortPixel Image Optimizer

If you have been using another image optimization plugin before installing ShortPixel Image Optimizer (SPIO) you need to follow a few steps. These change, though, depending on what you're looking for.

I want ShortPixel to reoptimize my images

If you want to optimize your whole Media Library, which was already optimized with another image compression plugin, you need to restore the backups of your images. Each plugin does it in a different way, so you need to find out how to do that. If you don't restore the backups, then ShortPixel will optimize your already compressed images, which can lead to quality issues.

In short:

  1. Before uninstalling the old image optimization plugin, restore your original images.
  2. Uninstall the old image optimization plugin.
  3. Install ShortPixel Image Optimizer.
  4. Start optimizing!

I want to preserve the optimization of my images

In this case, you don't need to do anything special. Uninstall your previous image compression plugin, install ShortPixel Image Optimizer, and just make sure to not use the Bulk ShortPixel option (under the Media menu) because that's going to optimize your whole Media Library, even the old files.

To automatically optimize only the newly uploaded files:

  1. Go to Settings > ShortPixel > Advanced.
  2. Make sure you have enabled "Optimize media on upload".

I'm already using SPIO and I want to start using ShortPixel Adaptive Images (SPAI), do I need to do anything special?

If you already use ShortPixel Image Optimizer (SPIO), and want to start using ShortPixel Adaptive Images (SPAI) too, we recommend taking a look at this article.
