Step-by-step guide to install and use ShortPixel Image Optimizer (SPIO)
There are 3 ways you can install SPIO, and they are the same as with every other plugin.
Install SPIO using WordPress Plugin Search
First thing you need to do is go to your WordPress admin area and click on Plugins > Add New. Then, write on the search field "shortpixel image optimize".
Now, click on Install Now on the ShortPixel Image Optimizer box. The button will change to Activate. Click on it and that's it!
Install SPIO using the WordPress Admin Plugin Upload
You can also download an upload the plugin, if you don't feel like using the plugin search. First, go to the plugin page by clicking here and download the plugin.
Go to your WordPress admin area and go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
Click on Choose File, look for the .zip that you just downloaded, select it, and upload it here by clicking on Install Now. After activating it, that's it!
Manually Install a WordPress Plugin using FTP
The 3rd way, which is for experienced users, is to download and upload the plugin via FTP. First of all, go to the plugin page by clicking here and download the plugin.
Now, extract the .zip file on your computer. Extracting the plugin .zip file will create a new folder with the same name. This is the folder that you need to manually upload to your website using a FTP client.
Open the FTP client on your computer and connect to your website using the login credentials provided by your web host. Once connected, you need to access the path /wp-content/plugins
Next, upload the folder you extracted from the .zip file to the /wp-content/plugins folder on your web server.
After uploading the files, you need to visit the WordPress admin area and click on the Plugins link in the admin menu. You will see your plugin successfully installed on the plugins page.
And you need to click on the Activate link below the plugin.
Adding your API Key
In order for the optimization process to work, you must configure the plugin with the API Key from the ShortPixel dashboard. Login to your ShortPixel account, go to the API Key menu and copy the "API_KEY".
Then go to the plugin settings (Settings > ShortPixel) and add the API Key you just copied. Don't forget to press the Save settings & validate button!
Optimizing your images
All done, now you can start using the plugin. Follow these steps:
- First of all, make sure to go Settings > ShortPixel and review all the settings to make sure everything is set up how you want. You can go to this section of our knowledge base in case you have any doubts.
- Once your settings are set, you can either
- Pat yourself on the back; your next uploads will be automatically optimized (as long as you set it up before).
- Go to the menu Media > Bulk ShortPixel to optimize all the images that were uploaded before installing ShortPixel.
